My role

As Lead Designer, I was responsible for the end-to-end design of the first-launch user flow for the Leon.ru iOS app from research and user flows to high-fidelity designs. Working closely with the Product Owner and developers, I ensured onboarding screens for geolocation, notifications, and biometric login were intuitive, compliant with Apple’s guidelines, and consistent with the updated platform.

Problem

The previous app lacked a complete onboarding experience. Essential first-launch steps were either missing or poorly implemented, which led to usability issues and risked confusing or disengaging new users from the very beginning.

The previous app lacked a complete onboarding experience. Essential first-launch steps were either missing or poorly implemented, which led to usability issues and risked confusing or disengaging new users from the very beginning.

Solution

A new first-launch flow was created with clear, step-by-step onboarding screens for permissions and authentication. Built on competitor research, user journey mapping, and high-fidelity design aligned with Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines, the flow provides a smoother, more intuitive start to the app and establishes user trust from the very first interaction.

Outcome

The redesigned first-launch flow established a clear and consistent onboarding experience, reducing friction for new users and increasing trust from the very first interaction. Custom permission screens improved user understanding and compliance, while the structured user flow streamlined collaboration with developers and QA, resulting in faster implementation and reduced iteration time.

Discovery

I collaborated with the Product Owner and iOS development team to outline and document key user scenarios. This alignment ensured clarity on possible edge cases and provided a solid foundation for mapping the first-launch flow.

Key user scenatios

Through collaboration with the development team and analysis of existing Face ID and Touch ID flows, we identified the need for additional custom screens to request user permissions for specific actions.

Design & Prototype

Through research and collaboration with the development team, we established a unified approach for all consent requests by introducing custom explanatory screens. After defining the flows, we produced low- and mid-fidelity prototypes, which were iterated and tested before moving into high-fidelity design.

User Flow from the first launch to login

User testing showed that people needed clearer guidance during onboarding. As a result, we enhanced the screens with step-by-step instructions, making it easier for users to enable location services directly in iOS settings and reducing friction in the first-launch experience.

Result

The new first-launch flow made onboarding simpler and more intuitive, helping users understand what was being asked of them and why. This not only improved their first experience with the app but also made the design easier for developers to implement and test. The project brought the iOS app in line with the refreshed platform and created a solid base for future enhancements.
